19 Waltzes
for the distanced

For 2020, we embarked on the project “19 Waltzes for the Distanced,” which involved the participation of the community in a large-scale performance of a composition by the American composer John Cage. The project took place in sites across the area colonially known as Vancouver, on the ancestral and unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh nations, and highlights the city’s neighbourhoods, artists, and arts community.

By using chance operations, we opted for 57 random locations across Vancouver, including parks, residential street corners, and industrial areas.

On the 19th of September, 2020 from 1 to 4 pm, participants were invited to go to one or more of the randomly-generated addresses and Perform, Listen, and/or Make a Record.

The performances and locations were uploaded to the website, allowing online participants to browse the Records crafted at each specific place.
